Why Duplex Performs Better in Many Chloride Environments
316L contains molybdenum and offers good pitting resistance for many industrial environments.
However, warm chloride service can be difficult for conventional austenitic stainless steels. Duplex grades generally provide better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. They also offer higher strength.

Corrosion Resistance Is Not the Only Difference
Duplex stainless steel also offers higher mechanical strength than 316L. This can be useful in pressure equipment, structural parts and process systems.
Higher strength may allow thinner sections in some designs. That decision must be made by the design engineer and applicable code.
Fabrication also needs attention. Duplex welding must control heat input and interpass temperature. The goal is to maintain a suitable phase balance and corrosion performance.
