For pressure-service stainless steel pipe, grade alone is not a complete specification. A usable purchase requirement must connect the material grade, pipe standard, manufacturing route, outside diameter, wall thickness or schedule, end preparation, testing scope and service conditions. Missing any one of these items can produce a pipe that is chemically correct but dimensionally or technically unsuitable for the system.
The Minimum Information a Pipe RFQ Should Contain

Grade Selection Must Follow the Service Environment
304/304L for general corrosion conditions
304 and 304L are widely specified where general atmospheric or moderately corrosive service is expected. The lower-carbon 304L grade is commonly considered when welding is significant, but the final choice must follow the design code, temperature range and corrosion assessment.
316/316L where chloride resistance is more important
316 and 316L contain molybdenum and generally provide better resistance to localized corrosion than 304-family grades in many chloride-bearing environments. This does not make 316L immune to pitting, crevice corrosion or stress-corrosion cracking. Chloride concentration, temperature, oxygen level, deposits, cleaning practice and crevice geometry must all be reviewed.
High-temperature and special-service grades
Grades such as 321, 347, 310S or duplex stainless steels may be considered when elevated temperature, sensitization control, strength or chloride stress-corrosion resistance changes the material-selection basis. They are not automatic upgrades. Welding procedures, heat treatment, phase balance, impact requirements and applicable product standards must be checked for the actual project.
Pipe Standard and Dimensional Standard Are Different
A material standard defines product requirements such as manufacturing route, chemistry, heat treatment, mechanical properties and tests. A dimensional standard defines sizes, schedules and nominal wall thicknesses. For example, an austenitic stainless steel pipe may be ordered to a material specification while its dimensional series is stated separately. The RFQ should identify both where the project documentation requires them.
NPS is not the measured outside diameter for every size. Likewise, a schedule designation is not a single wall thickness across all nominal sizes. Buyers should state NPS and schedule, or provide the actual OD and minimum/nominal wall requirement permitted by the governing specification. For cut pieces, include length tolerance and whether end squareness or bevel geometry is critical.
Seamless or Welded: Choose by Requirement, Not Assumption
Seamless pipe removes a longitudinal weld from the product, while welded pipe can offer practical availability and dimensional advantages in many sizes. Neither route should be declared universally superior. The correct choice depends on the permitted routes in the specification, design code, pressure and temperature, corrosion mechanism, inspection scope, fabrication plan and project approval.
If welded construction is acceptable, state whether the project has additional weld examination, heat-treatment or filler-metal restrictions. If seamless construction is mandatory, write it explicitly in the purchase description instead of relying on an informal note.
Testing and Documentation Should Be Proportionate
The purchase order should distinguish standard-required testing from project-specific supplementary inspection. A material test certificate can report the traceable heat, chemistry and mechanical results required by the ordered specification. Hydrostatic testing or an accepted nondestructive electric test may apply according to the product standard and order conditions. PMI verifies alloy identity at selected locations; it does not replace mechanical testing, corrosion assessment or weld examination.

- Total quantity, random/fixed length and cut-length tolerance
- Plain, beveled or other end preparation
- Surface condition, cleanliness and marking requirements
- Service fluid, design temperature, pressure and relevant corrosion conditions
- Required certificate, inspection, PMI, hydrostatic/NDT and third-party witnessing
- Packing method and destination country
