Schedule 10 and Schedule 40 are common stainless steel pipe wall designations, but the schedule number does not represent a fixed wall thickness across every nominal pipe size. Buyers must combine nominal pipe size, schedule, material grade and dimensional standard to define the correct pipe.

What Does Pipe Schedule Mean?

Pipe schedule is a standardized wall-thickness series used with nominal pipe size. It is not a direct measurement in millimeters and it is not equal to pressure rating. For the same nominal size, a higher schedule normally has a thicker wall and a smaller internal diameter while the outside diameter remains unchanged.

Stainless pipe specifications may use designations such as Schedule 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. The “S” series is associated with stainless steel dimensional tables. A purchase order should identify the exact standard and dimensional designation rather than relying on an informal description such as “thin wall” or “heavy wall.”

Wall Thickness Must Be Checked by Nominal Size

A schedule designation cannot be converted to one universal wall thickness. For example, the Schedule 10S wall for one nominal pipe size is different from the Schedule 10S wall for another. Always consult the dimensional table specified on the order and verify outside diameter, nominal wall and permitted tolerance.

Calculations should use the minimum permitted wall after manufacturing tolerance, not only the nominal wall. If corrosion or erosion is expected, the engineering specification may add a corrosion allowance.

Pressure Rating Is Not Determined by Schedule Alone

A thicker wall can support greater pressure under otherwise equal conditions, but allowable pressure also depends on material strength, temperature, weld efficiency, corrosion allowance and the applicable piping code. Grade 304/304L and 316/316L may therefore have different suitability even at the same size and schedule. Final pressure design must be calculated and approved by the responsible engineer.

Seamless or Welded Pipe

Both seamless and welded stainless steel pipe can be supplied in scheduled dimensions when covered by the relevant specification. The required manufacturing route should be stated if it affects service, inspection or project approval. Welded pipe may offer cost and dimensional advantages in many sizes, while seamless pipe may be specified for particular pressure, temperature or project requirements.

How to Select the Right Schedule

  1. Confirm nominal pipe size and dimensional standard.
  2. Calculate design pressure and temperature under the governing code.
  3. Select the stainless grade for corrosion and fabrication requirements.
  4. Apply mill tolerance and any required corrosion allowance.
  5. Check flow requirements because thicker walls reduce internal diameter.
  6. Confirm joining method, fittings, welding procedure and inspection.
  7. Issue an RFQ with complete size, schedule, grade and testing details.
