Which Diameter Does Your Drawing Mean?
The word “diameter” can refer to the tube itself or to the much larger coil. Label each dimension explicitly on the drawing and quotation. Also identify whether the coil is a delivery package that will be unwound or a formed component that must retain its shape.
| Dimension | What It Describes | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Tube OD | Outside diameter of the tube cross-section | Nominal size, units and applicable tolerance |
| Wall thickness | Metal thickness between the inner and outer surfaces | Nominal or minimum wall basis and tolerance |
| Tube ID | Bore of the tube | Whether it is a calculated nominal value or a controlled acceptance dimension |
| Coil ID and OD | Inner opening and outer envelope of the wound coil | Measurement datum, packaging limits and whether a reel is included |
| Coil height or width | Axial extent of the wound package or formed coil | Direction shown on the drawing and handling clearance |
| Continuous length | Tube length along its path in one supplied piece | Length per piece, tolerance and permitted joints |
Continuous Length Is Different from Coil Size
Coils with similar outside dimensions can contain different tube lengths. Tube OD, the central opening, winding pattern, number of layers and package width all affect the amount of tube that fits. Counting visible turns or measuring only the outer diameter is insufficient to establish the delivered length of a multilayer coil.
State Length per Piece, Not Only Total Order Length
An order for a total length does not automatically require that length in a single piece. State the required uninterrupted length of each coil, the number of coils and the accepted length tolerance. Ask how the delivered length will be measured and identified on the packing record.
Clarify What “Joint-Free” Means
A longitudinal manufacturing weld in welded tubing and a circumferential joint connecting tube lengths are different features. “Continuous coil” alone should not be interpreted as a seamless manufacturing route or a guarantee that no lengthwise joining has occurred. State the required route, whether circumferential joints are allowed, and the documentation required by the order.
Delivery Coil or Finished Heat-Exchange Coil?
For tubing supplied for unwinding, coil dimensions primarily help plan packaging, storage, transport and installation equipment. For a finished helical component, the drawing also needs to define the installed geometry, including the diameter datum, pitch, number of turns, overall height and end orientation where relevant.
A Practical Order Check
- Define the use. Identify delivery tubing for unwinding or a finished formed coil, with the applicable service specification.
- Separate tube dimensions. State grade, manufacturing route, tube OD, wall thickness, tolerances and required condition.
- Define each continuous piece. State length per coil, number of coils, length tolerance and joint restrictions.
- Define the coil envelope. Provide coil ID, OD and height or width limits, the measurement datum and any reel or handling constraints.
- Agree on acceptance. Include dimensional records, traceability, end protection and any inspection or testing required by the governing specification.
