DN means Nominal Diameter. It is the metric nominal designation commonly used together with international piping systems. DN values are rounded reference sizes and should not be treated as actual outside diameters.

OD means Outside Diameter. This is the actual external diameter that can be measured on the pipe.

For example, NPS 4 corresponds to DN100, but the actual pipe outside diameter is 114.3 mm. A 4-inch pipe therefore does not have an outside diameter of exactly 4 inches.

How Pipe Schedule Changes Wall Thickness

Why a 2-Inch Pipe Is Not 50.8 mm OD

This is one of the most common questions in international pipe purchasing. Two inches converts mathematically to 50.8 mm, but NPS 2 is a nominal designation rather than an actual diameter.

The standardized outside diameter of NPS 2 pipe is approximately 60.3 mm. This OD remains the same whether the pipe is SCH 5S, SCH 10S or SCH 40S. Only the wall thickness and internal diameter change.

This is why direct mathematical conversion from NPS to millimeters should not be used to determine pipe OD.
