A 4×8 stainless steel sheet describes a nominal sheet size of 4 feet by 8 feet, but it does not define the grade, exact thickness, finish, tolerance or final weight. Buyers should specify all of these items because two sheets with the same footprint can differ substantially in performance, fabrication behavior and cost.
What “4×8 Sheet” Means
The term is a market shorthand for a four-foot by eight-foot sheet. Metric stock may be supplied as 1219 × 2438 mm, 1220 × 2440 mm or another nearby mill size. These dimensions are not interchangeable when a fabrication drawing has tight nesting, edge or trimming requirements. State whether the size is nominal, exact, mill edge or cut edge.

Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³)
For an initial estimate, many austenitic stainless steels are close to 8.0 g/cm³, but the density varies by grade. Use the grade-specific value for freight planning and do not treat calculated weight as the certified shipped weight. Thickness tolerance, trimming and actual dimensions also affect the result.

Choose Grade Before Finish
Grade selection should be based on corrosion exposure, temperature, fabrication and cleaning requirements. Grade 304/304L is widely used for general fabrication. Finish, Flatness and Protective Film
Common descriptions include No.1, 2B, BA, brushed and mirror finishes. A finish name alone may not control appearance closely enough for architectural work, so specify roughness, grain direction, color range or an approved sample when needed. Protective film type and laser compatibility should also be confirmed before cutting.
