First Identify the Stain
Orange surface staining may come from carbon-steel dust, contaminated tools or runoff rather than loss of the stainless substrate. Pits, crevice attack and recurring rust indicate a deeper material, design or environment problem. Cleaning alone will not restore lost metal.
Safe Cleaning Sequence
- Wash loose dirt and salts with clean water and a neutral detergent.
- Use a dedicated nylon pad or stainless-compatible cleaner for light deposits.
- For iron contamination, use a formulated citric or nitric treatment under the relevant procedure.

When Pickling or Passivation Is Needed
Pickling removes heat tint, scale and a thin surface layer; passivation removes free iron and supports formation of the chromium-rich passive film. They are different processes. Chemical selection, concentration, temperature, dwell time and waste handling require qualified controls.
Prevent the Rust from Returning
- Separate stainless fabrication tools from carbon-steel tools.
- Remove weld heat tint and restore the surface correctly.
- Avoid chloride retention, crevices and poor drainage.
- Select a suitable grade for the environment.
- Establish cleaning and inspection intervals.
For replacement or upgraded material, compare stainless steel sheet and plate grades against the actual chloride and temperature conditions.
