Choose stainless steel wire mesh by its job, not simply by whether the wires are woven or welded. Woven cloth is a common starting point for screening and filtration; welded mesh is often considered for panels, enclosures and infill. Neither construction is automatically suitable for a particular pressure, impact or safety requirement. Opening size, wire diameter, support and the finished assembly still need to be specified.
The practical question is what must remain controlled in service: particle passage, panel shape, cleanability or attachment to a frame. Answering that first makes quotations easier to compare and reduces the risk of ordering a visually similar but functionally different mesh.
What Is the Difference Between Woven and Welded Mesh?
Woven mesh is made by interlacing wires in two directions. Welded mesh joins crossing wires at their intersections. This distinction describes the construction of the mesh itself, not every manufacturing operation used on a finished part.

Do not read this comparison as a load-rating table. A thick-wire woven screen and a light welded panel cannot be ranked by construction name alone. For a guarding or structural application, the responsible designer must assess the complete mesh, frame, fixing arrangement and applicable requirements.
For Filtration, Specify Separation Performance First
Opening Size Is Only Part of the Filter Specification
A filtration inquiry should identify the liquid or gas, operating conditions, particles to be retained and the required retention criterion. Then agree the weave and test basis. A nominal mesh count is not, by itself, a verified filtration rating, and a photograph cannot establish how a replacement filter will perform.
For a replacement component, provide the original drawing or approved specification where possible. Identify the filtering layer separately from any support layer. Also describe cleaning or backwashing, the housing interface and the conditions under which the element will be evaluated. These details are more useful than asking for the “finest available” mesh.
A Welded Filter Seam Does Not Mean Welded Mesh
Woven wire cloth can be formed into a cylinder and joined during fabrication. A welded seam on that cylinder does not turn its interlaced filtering material into welded mesh. State both requirements separately: the cloth construction and the way the finished filter is assembled. This avoids a common misunderstanding when a buyer requests a “welded stainless steel filter.”
For Panels, Start with the Frame and the Edges
When the mesh will form an enclosure or infill panel, send a drawing that shows the finished panel size, orientation and fixing points. Identify which edges remain exposed and which enter a channel or frame. Projecting wire ends may create a very different installation condition from flush-trimmed edges.
An inquiry for a flat sheet alone does not define the behaviour of the installed panel. Ask how the panel will be supported and what service requirement it must satisfy. If openings are rectangular, state both directions and show their orientation on the drawing rather than using a single opening dimension.
Do Not Let Construction Replace Material Selection
Grade selection is a separate decision from woven versus welded construction. Describe the actual exposure, including cleaning chemicals, moisture, temperature and any salt contact. A grade name alone is not a guarantee of corrosion-free service, and changing the wire arrangement is not a substitute for reviewing the material and surface requirements.
For welded assemblies, include the required condition of the joints and adjacent surfaces in the purchase specification. If inspection or documentation is necessary, define it before ordering. Do not assume that a general product photograph proves material identity, weld acceptance or a particular surface treatment.
A Practical RFQ and Receiving Checklist
- Define the function: screening, filtration, panel infill or another stated duty.
- Identify the construction: woven pattern or welded intersections, plus any fabrication drawing.
- Specify geometry: clear opening in each direction, wire diameter, dimensions and tolerances.
- Describe edges and supply form: roll, cut piece or finished assembly, with edge treatment and orientation.
- Agree acceptance: material documentation, dimensional checks and any application-specific testing.
At receipt, compare the delivered construction and dimensions with the order before fabrication. Record the lot identification, photographs of the edges and any damaged or visibly inconsistent areas. Appearance is useful for screening a delivery, but it does not establish filtration performance or safety compliance.
