ASTM A270 Stainless Steel Sanitary Tube Overview

SAKYSTEEL supplies 304L and 316L stainless steel sanitary tubing for dairy, beverage, food and other hygienic process lines. This product is selected for its sanitary tubing specification, controlled product-contact surface and compatibility with the dimensions required by hygienic piping systems. Choose the grade and finish around the process fluid, cleaning conditions and installation requirements.

    Quick Information

    Material: 304L / UNS S30403 or 316L / UNS S31603

Product specification: ASTM A270/A270M, with the edition and supplementary requirements identified in the order

Common sizes: 1–4 in. OD, with 1.65 or 2.11 mm wall in the combinations below

Surface selection: Inside and outside finish specified separately; maximum internal Ra when required

Length and ends: Required tube length, end preparation and fitting dimensions stated with the inquiry

    Features for Hygienic Process Piping

    • Product-contact surface: The internal finish is selected to support cleaning and limit product retention. Internal surface defects and the weld area, where present, also matter; external brightness alone is not an acceptance criterion.
    • 304L and 316L options: Two familiar low-carbon stainless steel grades allow material selection around the process medium and cleaning chemistry. Grade selection remains separate from the choice of surface finish.
    • Dimensions for installation: Specified OD, wall thickness and end condition help match the tubing to hygienic fittings and the selected joining procedure.
    • A defined supply standard: ASTM A270 provides a sanitary tubing basis for manufacture, heat treatment, testing and surface finish. Any additional pharmaceutical or project requirements should be identified explicitly.

    Common Sizes for Quotation

The following are common sanitary tube OD and wall combinations. Dimensions are nominal and metric equivalents are rounded. Use the specified OD rather than an assumed pipe nominal size when selecting matching fittings.

Tube OD (in.) Tube OD (mm) Wall (in.) Wall (mm)
    1 25.40 0.065 1.65
    1-1/2 38.10 0.065 1.65
    2 50.80 0.065 1.65
    2-1/2 63.50 0.065 1.65
    3 76.20 0.065 1.65
    4 101.60 0.083 2.11

Other dimensions, wall thicknesses and cut lengths can be reviewed for quotation. State the controlling dimensional system and tolerances. The table lists reference combinations, not current inventory or allowable working pressure.

    Choosing 304L or 316L

    Grade Selection considerations
304L / UNS S30403 A common option for food, beverage and general hygienic service where the product and cleaning agents are compatible with 304L.
316L / UNS S31603 Its molybdenum addition improves resistance to certain localized corrosion conditions compared with 304L. Review the actual medium, concentration and temperature; 316L is not suitable for every chemical environment.

    Internal Finish and Hygienic Connections

Specify the inside finish separately from the outside finish. A grit designation or polished appearance does not establish a particular maximum Ra. Where surface roughness is an acceptance requirement, identify the limit, measurement method and inspection coverage.

For welded tubing, include the internal weld region in the surface requirements. For installation, verify the tube OD series, wall thickness, end preparation and mating fitting dimensions. Plain tube does not include ferrules, clamps or gaskets unless these are specifically included in the supply scope.

    Typical Applications

    • Dairy and beverage lines: Product transfer and processing pipework requiring a defined sanitary surface.
    • Food and personal-care equipment: Hygienic fluid handling where the grade and cleaning conditions are compatible.
    • Pharmaceutical and bioprocess installations: Projects that specify A270 tubing together with any additional BPE, surface or documentation requirements.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How is sanitary tubing different from ordinary industrial tubing?

The sanitary purchase specification places particular emphasis on the surface contacting the product, in addition to material, dimensions and testing. A bright appearance or a 316L material designation alone does not establish compliance with a sanitary tubing specification.

Does ASTM A270 automatically mean ASME BPE compliance?

No. ASME BPE addresses broader equipment and system requirements. If BPE applies, identify the relevant dimensional, surface, joining and documentation requirements in addition to the A270 tubing specification.

Can ASTM A270 sanitary tubing have an electropolished surface?

Yes. A270 and EP describe different aspects of the product: A270 is the tubing specification, while EP is a surface treatment. An electropolished sanitary tube can be ordered with the required A270 and additional project criteria.

Can the tubing be used in CIP or SIP systems?

Suitability depends on the material, internal finish, system design and cleaning or sterilization conditions. Provide the cleaning chemicals, concentration, temperature and cycle conditions for material and surface review.

Will it fit my existing sanitary clamps and fittings?

Verify the exact OD series, wall and fitting dimensions first. The same nominal size label does not establish interchangeability across different dimensional standards. Send the fitting standard or drawing when matching an existing line.

    Inspection, Protection and Delivery

Identify the required material certificate, dimensional checks and surface inspection records with the order. Where a maximum Ra is specified, agree how it will be verified. End protection, individual sleeves and outer packing should protect the selected surface during transport; any special cleaning or handling requirements must be included in the delivery scope.

Request an ASTM A270 Sanitary Tube Quote

Send the grade, OD × wall, length and quantity, together with the inside/outside finish, required Ra, fitting or end details, service conditions and inspection documents. Include any additional BPE requirements.
