    Stainless Steel Pipe Production Process

The production of stainless steel pipe includes the following steps: raw material selection, lubrication, annealing, grinding, acid cleaning, cold drawing, ultrasonic testing, and final packaging. Each step ensures the pipe meets high standards of quality, precision, and surface finish.

    Stainless Steel Pipe Production Process

    Stainless Steel Pipe Roughness test

The roughness test for stainless steel pipes is a critical inspection process used to evaluate the surface finish quality of the inner or outer pipe surface. Surface roughness, typically measured in Ra (roughness average), affects flow efficiency, corrosion resistance, and cleanliness—especially in industries like pharmaceuticals, food processing, and semiconductor manufacturing. Using precision instruments such as surface profilometers, inspectors verify that the pipe meets required specifications, such as Ra ≤ 0.8 µm or Ra ≤ 0.2 µm, depending on the application. Ensuring proper surface roughness improves product performance, cleanliness, and overall durability.

Eddy Current Testing of Stainless Steel Tubes

Eddy current testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and near-surface defects in stainless steel tubes. This technique is especially effective for identifying cracks, pits, and other discontinuities without damaging the material. By inducing an electromagnetic field into the tube and monitoring changes in the eddy current flow, inspectors can quickly evaluate the integrity of the tube wall. Eddy current testing is widely used in the production of seamless and welded stainless steel tubes, particularly for heat exchanger, boiler, and instrumentation applications. It ensures product reliability and compliance with industry standards such as ASTM E426 and EN 10246-3.

    Ferrite Content Testing

Ferrite content testing is an essential quality control process for stainless steel pipes, especially those made from austenitic or duplex grades. This non-destructive test measures the amount of ferrite phase present in the pipe material or weld zone to ensure optimal corrosion resistance, mechanical performance, and weld integrity. Excessive or insufficient ferrite content can lead to issues such as stress corrosion cracking or reduced toughness. Testing is commonly performed using magnetic induction methods (e.g., Ferrite Scope), and complies with standards such as ASTM E562, ISO 8249, or AWS A4.2. In piping systems used in critical environments—such as offshore platforms, pressure vessels, and chemical plants—ferrite content control is crucial for long-term reliability and safety.

Online Solution Annealing of Stainless Steel Tubes

Online solution annealing is a continuous heat treatment process applied to stainless steel tubes during production to enhance their corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and microstructural uniformity. In this process, the tubes are rapidly heated to the solutionizing temperature—typically between 1000°C and 1150°C—followed by controlled cooling, often using water or inert gas. This treatment dissolves carbide precipitates and restores the austenitic structure, which is especially important for grades like 304 and 316. By integrating this step directly into the production line, online solution annealing ensures consistent quality, improves efficiency, and eliminates the need for separate batch annealing.

PT test of Stainless Steel Tubes

SAKY STEEL performs penetrant testing PT on stainless steel pipes and components as part of our strict quality control process. PT is a non destructive testing method used to detect surface defects such as cracks porosity and inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye.

Our trained inspectors apply high quality penetrant and developer materials to ensure accurate and reliable results. All PT procedures follow international standards and customer specifications guaranteeing product safety and performance.
